Background

Kentico Migration Services

Most Kentico migrations don’t slow down because of the amount of content. The real challenges lie beneath the surface.

We assess the scope before migration starts, so your team moves to Xperience by Kentico without inheriting a new layer of technical debt in place of the old one.

Kentico 13 end of support is December 2026 — What it means for your platform

Support deadlines create growing technical and security risks as older Kentico environments become harder to maintain and scale. Kentico's official support lifecycle confirms December 31, 2026 as as the support cutoff for Xperience 13.

Security and support risks increase

When Kentico 13 leaves support, your team loses vendor patches, compatibility updates, and a clear path for resolving platform issues. That creates more exposure in security reviews, especially for regulated organizations that need a defensible audit trail and a current, supported environment.

Legacy customizations become more expensive to maintain

Old Kentico implementations tend to collect custom code, one-off fixes, and undocumented dependencies over time. That makes every change slower and more expensive, with more QA effort, more developer involvement, and more friction each time the site needs to move.

Integrations and infrastructure become harder to scale

As the platform ages, it becomes harder to support new channels, modern integrations, and flexible content operations without touching core architecture. That limits scalability, personalization, and omnichannel delivery, while making future modernization more disruptive than it should be.

Background

Why investing in Kentico migration services before support ends matters.

Enterprise migrations take 6–12 months. Q3/Q4 2026 start dates leave no runway for a controlled rollout.

How a migration engagement works

Successful Kentico migrations rely on strong planning, early dependency validation, and risk mitigation before delivery begins.

01.

Migration assessment

We audit your environment: content model, custom widgets and modules, integrations, hosting setup, and content volume. You receive a report with: migration complexity rating, estimated effort and timeline, integration risk map, recommended XbyK content architecture, and a phased delivery roadmap.

02.

Architecture & planning (included in full project scope)

Before writing a single line of code, we design the XbyK content model, map your integrations, plan your staging environment, and carefully define the cutover sequence. This is where migrations succeed or fail — and it is where most agencies often skip ahead too fast.

03.

Parallel build & migration
(6–20 weeks depending on complexity)

We build the XbyK environment in parallel with your K13 site. Custom modules are rebuilt. Integrations are rewritten and tested. Content is migrated and validated. Your editors are trained on XbyK before go-live. Your K13 site stays live throughout.

04.

Controlled cutover

We plan your cutover window — typically a low-traffic period — and execute with a staged rollout and rollback plan. DNS, redirects, integrations, and CDN configuration are handled as part of cutover.

05.

Post-migration stabilization (30–60 days)

Included in all engagements. We monitor performance, resolve any post-launch issues, and document the new environment for your internal team. Many clients continue with a monthly retainer for ongoing XbyK development.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Kentico migration take?

It depends on site size, integration complexity, content volume, and how much custom functionality needs to be modernized. Smaller migrations can move quickly – 4–8 weeks, while enterprise projects with multiple systems and SEO requirements usually take longer – 6–12 months – because they often run across 3–6 phases.

What affects Kentico migration services cost?

Cost is driven by custom code volume, integration scope, and migration complexity.

  • $15k–$40k — version upgrade, limited integrations
  • $40k–$120k — content restructuring, multiple integrations, SEO work
  • $120k–$300k+ — enterprise modernization, custom code, multi-site

We scope against the actual project after a dependency audit — not against an optimistic estimate.

Can Kentico migration preserve SEO rankings?

Yes, but only if redirects, URL mapping, metadata, structured data, and launch validation are handled carefully. A migration can protect search performance, but weak planning often causes ranking drops, crawl issues, or broken analytics continuity.

What is the difference between a Kentico upgrade and a migration to XbyK?

An upgrade moves along the same platform path with limited architectural change. A migration to XbyK involves content model redesign, frontend rebuild, and integration revalidation — XbyK's Content Hub is fundamentally different from KX13 Page Types. Most K13-to-XbyK projects are migrations, not upgrades, regardless of how the Kentico documentation describes them.

Does migrating to Xperience by Kentico require rebuilding the entire site?

Not always. Some organizations can reuse portions of the existing implementation, while others benefit from restructuring architecture, content models, or frontend components during modernization.

When should we start planning?

Now. Kentico 13 support ends December 31, 2026. Enterprise migrations require 6–12 months. The dependency audit — which defines actual scope, cost, and timeline — should happen before the implementation contract is signed, not after.

Do you handle Portal Engine to Xperience by Kentico migrations?

Yes. Portal Engine requires a two-stage approach — Portal Engine to MVC first, then MVC to XbyK. We've delivered this for government and enterprise clients. Both stages are scoped as a single engagement with one shared discovery phase.
